An Open Letter to My College Friends

Updated: Dec 3, 2022

To my Dearest College Friends,

The transition to college life can be nerve-wracking for some. The decision to uproot one's life and begin again in a distant place is not one to be taken lightly by anyone. Finding a core group of people who become your closest friends makes the journey more beautiful.

It took some time, effort, and sorting out of the shenanigans, but I finally seemed to have the fantastic college experience I’d been told stories about. A big chunk of the credit for that wonderful time goes to you guys. I appreciate our friendship more than words can say. They share your pain and suffer along with you. They contribute to improving the comfort of your temporary dwelling significantly. I owe a great debt of gratitude to the people I met in college; without everyone, I would not have survived.

Finally, we stand at the threshold of our individual journeys, a little melancholy, a lot anxious, and getting prepared to take on the world. To be honest, I don't think any of us are quite ready for these past four years to come to a conclusion. Together with all of you, I have memories that will last a lifetime, and I wouldn't trade the previous four years, with all its ups and downs, for anything. I'd like to express my gratitude to everyone who assisted me in making our school feel more like a home. We made it through all those sleepless nights in the library, through all the rants we disclosed, through all the accomplishments we earned together, and through every perplexing, wonderful, and challenging day in between. It literally took blood, sweat and (a river) of tears to get us where we are today, and I couldn't be more grateful to have such a great support system by my side as I navigated the challenges of college. We experienced countless milestones together; I will always treasure our shared history. Whatever our friendship has been like over the past four years, I am forever thankful for it. Please accept my heartfelt gratitude.

I want to remember all the times we had together, from the chuckles and memorable moments to the late nights and antics, and hold on to them forever. It would have been great to have more of those memories if I had met you all sooner. You all made my time in college worthwhile and enjoyable. Without you guys, I'm not sure I would have made it through all the classes and 11:59pm frustrations. If I hadn't met all of you, I have no idea how different my college experience would have been.

I appreciate having you all as companions during my time at college. To have you as a friend forever is a bonus. We may have taken different paths since graduation, but keep in mind that all of you are my friends forever.

To all my Friends,

Thank you for existing. In retrospect, I realize that you came into my life at the very time when I needed you the most.

Please bear in mind how grateful I am that you have always been there for me, no matter what I was going through, and that you have accepted me for who I am despite my flaws.

Graduation, the day we never thought we'd embrace. There have been multiple attempts drafting this letter because I have avoided facing reality. Though you may not get to choose your relatives, you do have the rare option to pick your own family. You are like a member of my own family, an irreplaceable friend. Somebody I can't fathom my life without. We're more like sisters than anything else because of how closely we are connected. You are the only person in the world who knows me as well as I do. I entrusted these sentiments into writing, to serve as a constant reminder of how much you mean to me. Though I realize I may not be able to show it every day, please know that you are in my thoughts frequently.

Thank you for coming into my life. I think it's crucial to have "a person" and I can't think of anyone more perfect than you to fill that role. Through all the ups and downs of my last few years as a student, including family issues, shortcomings, infirmities, and graduation, you have always been there for me. I can't thank you enough for helping me out. If you've been following along and reading this far, you're probably wondering how grateful I am that you've stuck by me, learned about my life, and shown me such genuine support and unconditional love.

A "Support System" consists, in most people's minds, of their family and close friends. Still, the distinctions between the two groups have blurred for me; many of the people I formerly considered friends are now members of my family, and many of the people I once considered family are now among my closest friends.

To my Support Systems,

To me, you are a lot of things. In this world, no one can compare to you. My Other-half, my Best Friend, my Therapist, my Venting Partner, my source of Inspiration, and my closest Confidant. That one special person with whom one can share one's entire life with. To me, that means you. You are my person.

My life hasn't always been a bed of roses, but I've had a lot to be grateful for and I owe it all to the people who mean the most to me. To the person who won't leave me to deal with my emotions alone and who has been there for me when I've needed someone to listen and help me feel better. The companion who never gave up on advising and comforting me. The individual to make me feel like I belonged.

I appreciate your patience and tolerance, even when my emotional outbursts are unreasonable. When I was going through tough circumstances and making dubious decisions, I appreciate that you never passed judgment on me. My heart is stronger now, and I can't thank you enough for mending my agonizing soul. Thank you for being such a wonderful friend. Diamonds aren't a woman's best friend; rather, your closest friends are the diamonds in your life.

A friend who can see beyond a shattered fence, appreciates and admires the flowers in your beautiful garden.

To My Persons, My Support Systems, My Other Halves, My Eternal Best Friends—

Thank you for being born and coming into my life.

Thank you for existing in the same lifetime as me.

I love you with all my heart.

Best Regards,

Cleys.
